Civil Art has developed a personable and accessible interview format to archive the stories, thoughts, and dreams of the artists we feature. Our interview questions are divided into three parts:
We believe that artworks reflect artists’ nuanced experiences and backgrounds. Was there an object, environment, or person in your life that impacted your creativity and curiosity?
We want to learn about your drawing process. How do you prepare to make art? How do you research, sketch, and conceptualize in your practice?
We want to learn about the formal aspects of your artistic practice. How do you sculpt, paint, crystalize ideas, and visually express through material?
Sung Hwa Kim (b. 1985) is an artist based in New York City. He received a BFA from The Art Institute of Boston in 2008 and an MFA from the Maryland Institute College of Art in 2012.
Bony Ramirez (b. 1996) is an artist based in Jersey City. His work has been exhibited at the Modern Art Museum of Fort Worth, Bradley Ertaskiran, the Newark Museum of Art, François Ghebaly, BANK/ MABSOCIETY, and Jeffrey Deitch.
Ina Jang (b. 1982) is an artist based in New York City. She received a BFA in Photography from the SVA in 2010 and an MPS in Fashion Photography from SVA in 2012.
Yuri Yuan (b. 1996) is an artist based in New York. She received a BFA in Painting from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago and an MFA in Visual Arts from Columbia University.
Yujie Li (b. 1998) is an artist based in Guangzhou, China. She received a BA in Chinese Painting from The Guangzhou Academy of Fine Arts in 2020 and an MA in Painting from the Royal College of Art in 2023.
Asif Hoque (b. 1991) is an artist based in Brooklyn. He received an AA from Pratt Institute and continued education at Hunter College in 2014.
Nianxin Li (b. 1999) is an artist based in New York City. She received a BFA in Painting from the Academy of Fine Arts of Florence in 2021, and an MFA from the School of Visual Arts in 2023.
Edd Ravn (b. 1992) is an artist based in New York City. He received a BFA in Painting from the Glasgow School of Art in 2015 and an MFA in Painting from the Yale School of Art in 2020.
Wanki Min (b. 1988) is an artist based in Seoul, South Korea. He received a BBA from the Korea Aerospace University in 2013 and an MFA in Photography, Video, and Related Media from the School of Visual Arts in 2019.
Dabin Ahn (b. 1988) is an artist based in Chicago. He received a BFA in Painting from the School of the Art Institute in 2016 and an MFA in Painting from the School of the Art Institute in 2020.
Sophia Heymans (b. 1989) is an artist based in New York City. She received a BFA in Painting from Rhode Island School of Design in 2012.
Shuyi Cao (b. 1990) is an artist based in New York City. She received a Bachelor of Laws and M.A. in Public Administration from Fudan University in Shanghai, and an MFA in Fine Arts from Parsons School of Design.
Yoora Lee (b.1990) is an artist based in Los Angeles. She received a BFA in Painting from Gachon University in 2015 and an MFA in Painting and Drawing from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago in 2020.
Jin Jeong (b. 1993) is an artist based in New York City. She received a BFA from the School of the Art Institute in 2017 and an MFA from Hunter College in 2022.
Miwa Neishi (b. 1990) is a sculptor and artist based in New York City. She received a BFA in Sculpture from Niigata University in 2013, and an MFA in Sculpture from Kent State University in 2016.
Craig Taylor (b. 1971) is an artist based in New York City. He received a BFA in Printmaking from Maine College of Art in 1996 and an MFA in Painting from Yale University in 1998. He is currently an Associate Professor of Painting at Rhode Island School of Design.
Ji Woo Kim (b. 1996) is an artist based in New York City. She received a BFA in Painting from Pratt Institute in 2018 and an MFA in Fine Arts from the School of Visual Arts in 2023.
Drew Dodge (b. 2001) is an artist based in New York City. He received a BFA in Painting from Rhode Island School of Design in 2022.
Shyama Golden (b. 1983) is a Los Angeles-based artist. She received a BFA in Graphic Design from Texas Tech University in 2004.
